Low tox body wash recipe

The story of the creation of the creamy body wash….

I have such a supportive husband who has joined me on my low-tox journey. He’s put up with countless conversations about endocrine disruptors. He has been patient with me as I’ve slowly replaced every cleaning chemical and personal care product in our house.

HOWEVER, I just couldn’t get him to give up his (what I refer to as) ‘Blue Shit Body Wash’.

Challenge accepted.

I’ve been testing and refining a new recipe for a lusciously creamy, super smooth body wash that is 100% hubby approved.
And I’ve done it! He loves the texture and the scent.
We have thrown the Blue Shit Body Wash in the bin where it belongs, and I am now proud to share this recipe with you.

This recipe almost fills a 1ltr bottle as we use it for the whole family, but you can certainly half it if you like.

Creamy Body Wash

This luscious body wash recipe is great for the whole family and is gentle and safe for children, and can also be used as a smooth and creamy hand wash.
You can tailor it each time with your choice of essential oils, or even divide the batch before adding your oils so that each family member has their preferred scent.

Prep Time: 7 minutes

Total Time: 7 minutes
Makes: 1 Litre

Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Whisk
  • Funnel
  • 1 ltr bottle

Ingredients

  • 100 ml boiled water should still be warm to melt coconut oil
  • 50 grams coconut oil solid form (not fractionated)
  • 3 tsp xanthan gum
  • 800 ml boiled water doesn't matter if it's still warm, or cooled
  • 200 ml castile soap

Essential Oils

  • 30 drops preferred essential oil see notes for suggestions

Instructions

  • Add 100ml warm water, coconut oil and xanthan gum to the bowl
100 ml boiled water, 50 grams coconut oil, 3 tsp xanthan gum
  • Whisk until smooth and combined.  Coconut Oil should be 'melted' (no white clumps) and Xanthan gum should be well integrated. You will end up with a thick mixture which forms the base for your body wash
  • Add remaining ingredients and whisk until mixture is combined and becomes aerated. It will rise and become thicker - much like whisked egg whites. This usually takes about 3 minutes of whisking.
800 ml boiled water, 200 ml castile soap, 30 drops preferred essential oil
  • Use a funnel to transfer into your pump bottle

Notes

To begin making this recipe, I usually fill the kettle - enough for a cup of tea, plus 500ml extra.  I can then use the first 100ml in the first step, pour myself a cup of tea, then use the rest for the next step.
When sourcing a pump bottle, decide if you want glass or PET. If you are using it for body wash, I would recommend PET - glass in the shower is a little dangerous!  Remember that essential oils will break down plastic if it's not PET 1 or 2, so beware of using just any old plastic bottle.
When mixing/whisking, you can use an electric mixer, but I've actually decided that a hand whisk does the job just as well (and saves on extra cleaning up afterward).
Recommended essential oils
I use doTERRA's Coast or Island Mint essential oils - hubby absolutely loves both of these!
For an uplifting experience you could try one, or a combination of:
  • doTERRA's Citrus Bliss
  • Peppermint
  • Grapefruit
  • Lime
  • Eucalyptus
For a relaxing body wash try:
  • Lavender
  • doTERRA's Lavender Peace
  • Bergamot
  • Geranium
  • Roman Chamomile
